The Reserve Bank of India named ICICI Bank among the four banks in the first phase of its retail digital rupee (e₹-R) pilot launched on 1 December 2022. On 2 November 2023 ICICI Bank said its "Digital Rupee by ICICI Bank" app had been made UPI-interoperable so customers can pay to any merchant UPI QR code, live in 80 cities.
